|As a seventh-generation console, the Wii competes with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3 though it's quite inferior to these two in terms of graphics and sound capabilities. One of the very unique features of this console is the primary wireless controller (the Wii Remote) which can be used as a handheld pointing device and detects movement in three dimensions. Note that Wii succeeds the superb Nintendo GameCube, with early models being fully backward-compatible with all GameCube games and most accessories. The successor of the original Wii is the Wii U.|
There a few notable titles for the Wii console, such as Metroid Prime 3: Corruption that pushed the hardware to its limits offering quite impressive results. But again, Wii cannot be compared to the PS3 and XBOX 360 in any way due to its inferior hardware. Regarding graphics and sound capabilities, most people insists that Wii is a more "capable" Nintendo Gamecube rather than a 7th generation video-game console, which is (for me too) true.
On late 2012 Nintendo released a newer version Wii Mini which is the same hardware but in a smaller form-factor casing. Note that the Wii Mini is not the successor of the original Wii.
