Game Gear box title=The Sega's 8bit handheld was primarily competed with Nintendo's Game Boy, the Atari Lynx and NEC's TurboExpress. With around 11 million units sold, the Game Gear was on a solid second place, but very much behind the Game Boy. It was actually a portable version of the famous Master System (SMS) console but allowed for a larger color palette (4096) and also it could also produce stereo sound (through headphones).<
Technically the system was far superior to the Game Boy console having almost every port from its ... parent Master System. But, despite its higher specs, the backlit colored screen and ergonomic design, the Game Gear managed just a moderate share of the market, in contrast to Nintendo's little handheld.
