The game is known as "Gunhed" in Japan. Your mission is to destroy the Dark Squadron and its eight enemy Super Weapons. The game consists of nine (9) levels/areas. Every area contains one or more bosses, all of which must be destroyed before continuing in the game. A typical shoot em up scenario! You spaceship features a rapid-fire main cannon, which can either be upgraded or changed to other types of weapons by collecting various numbered power-ups. You may also collect optional power-ups to help fight through the game such as "multibodies" that shadow their actions, homing missiles, shields, and enhanced firing capabilities known as "full fire". And don't forget your limited supply of cluster bombs! To be honest this game reminded me the great shooter called "Wings of Death" on the 16bit Amiga and Atari ST computers!
Graphically, Blazing Lazers is great! It features great colors and multi-layer parallax and lots of enemy sprites on screen on the screen at one time! You will immediately realize gpu capabilites of the PC-Engine. The animations are fluid and the action is quite fast. As far as the sound, the game uses pretty nice in-game catchy tunes and great sfx. A trully great shoot em up that reminded me great times on similar games on the coin-ops (arcades)!
