|Novastorm is a shoot 'em up game, developed and published by Psygnosis for the Sega CD, Sega 32X and 3DO video games consoles.|
STORY / GAMEPLAY
Earth is no more! So the humans had to keep some valuable -and vital- resources (like seeds, plants, animals etc) inside some ark-like, armored containers. Everything is controlled via high technology systems so any human interference is minimal. But the sophisticated machines have their own artificial intelligence and one day, while turning wild, they "decide" to attack and vanish humans. You, as a skilled pilot and member of the Scavenger 4 unit, must control a fully armed spacecraft (among a wide variety of types) and fly against the enemy forces, preventing them from destroying your valuable resources. The game is played from a behind-the-aircraft perspective and the controls are quite responsive, although the game has a high level of difficulty and needs some time to practice maneuvering the spacecraft!
GRAPHICS / SOUND
The game's visuals look great, offering digitized backgrounds and a cool mix of dark colors! Novastorm features fast action with multiple angle changes and rotations on screen and many foes flying simultaneously around, plus the obstacles like mountains, bridges etc! The only disadvantage is that when things get too crowded, the game suffers from some slowdowns here and there. The enjoyable shooting action is accompanied by a selection of great CD audio soundtracks plus a variety of sampled sound effects, though I would prefer the use of better samples for the spacecraft's cannons. This game is surely challenging but still is one of the most impressive spacecraft shooting games ever created for the 32bit genre of gaming machines.
