The NewZealand Story is a 1988 arcade-platform game developed and published by Taito for the coin-ops. It was so famous back then that converted to several home systems such as Nintendo Entertainment System, Amiga, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Sega Master System, ZX Spectrum, Sega Mega Drive, PC Engine, and Virtual Console. The game was also converted for the Japanese FM Towns and Sharp X68000 systems in 1989, providing arcade-perfect conversions, but released exclusively in Japan since both computers were only available there.
 
Review
The NewZealand StoryControl a sneaker-wearing kiwi called Tiki, and the aim of the game is to rescue several of your kiwi friends who have been kiwi-napped by Wally, a large blue walrus/leopard seal. Navigate in scrolling maze-like levels, at the end of which they release a kiwi trapped in a cage. The weaponry starts out as arrows, but pickups can change these into bombs, lasers, or bouncing fireballs, each one useful upon the each level. You may also find (or steal) and ride a variety of flying vehicles, including balloons, blimps, and UFOs. Vehicles can be found ready for use or can be stolen from an enemy.
Collecting letters found during your quest to spell out "EXTEND" will take you instantly to the next stage (as in Bubble Bobble). The levels (and sub-levels) get progressively harder and puzzles start creeping in (usually there is no obvious way of getting near the cages and rescue kiwis, so you need to find a way with careful timing and appropriate shooting of certain foes and getting i.e. their balloon to fly, having always in mind the scattered spikes. There are even sub-aqua sections in which Tiki must swim in tunnels (with limited oxygen) in order reach his target.
Another problem is the time limit. Hang around on a stage too long and a big "hurry up!" notice comes on. Then after a few seconds a Devil appears and hits you with his trident, thus removing one of your lives (similarly situation as in Bubble Bobble)!"

The game here features beautiful arcade like colorful graphics much like the original. Graphics are ultra-cute and varied, as they cover the different environments of mountains, caves and seas, but without offering any special graphics effects really. Sprites move smoothly and quite fast on the screen too. The sound is nice using the original in-game tunes found on the arcades. Technically speaking the game is a great conversion from the original!
