Early in 90s' the quality of 8bit Commodore games had increased dramatically. A lot of talented programmers constantly found new ways to push the good old C64 further to its limits. This resulted in better graphics and music in the games, but not necessarily better gameplay. The most important factor in the gameplay quality is the design and innovation, not the technical abilities. Wrath of the Demon is one of these attempts, initially written for the Amiga and Atari ST, and then on the Commodore 64/128 (and MS-DOS). The Demon calls all his evil powers and hordes of strong creatures. Kingdom's Princess is lost and the King fears that the Demon took her away. You are the only one who can help find the Demon, destroy him, bring the Princess back and put an end to Anthrax's plans. Your quest it to get rid of a demon and save the world! The Demon calls all his evil powers and hordes of strong creatures. Kingdom's Princess is lost and the King fears that the Demon took her away. You are the only one who can help find the Demon, destroy him, bring the Princess back and put an end to Anthrax's plans. The way is extremely difficult though. You face traps, flying creatures, giants and finally the Demon himself. This game is one of the hardest ever made and one of the graphically advanced for the Amiga, ST and C64!
The background graphics are spectacular, very colorful and beautifully designed. I was astonished by the smoothness in screen scrolling for a C64 game indeed! Parallax scrolling in level 1 is spectacular and worth mentioning. The sprites look good on the little Commodore and the movement is quite smooth, whilst sometimes the monsters' offensive moves look funny. Most of the original (Amiga) graphics details are here which looks rather impressive too!
Soundwise, the C64 version is great too. All original tunes are found here, including the great introductory theme. The (original) music is what you expect from David Whittaker, is just amazing!
